A Pinched Nerve is what doctors call a nerve that’s experiencing pressure which causes pain or impaired function somewhere in your body. It commonly happens to nerves that control muscle movements and/or send painful or numbing sensations to your brain.
Symptoms of a pinched nerve may be tingling, numbness, a burning sensation or shooting pains down your buttocks and legs, or in some cases in your neck, shoulders, arms and fingers.

The pain happening in your body may actually come from a nerve that’s been pinched in a location different from where the site of pain actually resides… for example, a pinched nerve in your low back may cause pain in your calf and nowhere else. When there is nerve damage from constant and consistent pressure, pain and weakness may increase over time.
What is a nerve?
Nerves are extensions from the brain that reach out throughout your body, into the arms or legs and to your muscles and skin. A nerve is a cell that is microscopic in size, and its fibers may run several feet in length toward its destination. Your body contains both central nerves as well as peripheral nerves. Your peripheral nerves are actually bundles of millions of nerve fibers that leave the spinal cord and branch out to their target muscles which make them move.
If your nerve gets “pinched”, eventually the membrane starts to lose its healthy ability to transmit its tiny electrical charges and your nerve fiber may eventually die. When enough fibers stop working, the skin may feel numb or a muscle may not contract.
